As May rolls around it must be Hemsby time of year again! We jumped at the chance to be a part of the pinup pageant for the 3rd year running! Our contestant this year is 19 year old Olivia, dancer … Continue reading
We were really excited to be involved in the Pinup Pageant run by Di Brooks of Outer Limitz at the Hemsby Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival again this year!
Our contestant representing Miss Fortune this year was Emma Lou who has modelled for us in the past at the Americana International Rockin fashion Show.
The Contest Rounds
The 2 rounds of the contest were to have themes, the themes being ‘Barbie’ and ‘Classic Pinup’. We got straight to work researching some classic Barbie outfits and images of classic pinups!
We decided to directly recreate 2 outfits from a classic Barbie outfit and a painting of a classic pin up.
For Barbie we picked one the outfits from the year Barbie was launched, 1959. An outfit called ‘Cotton Casuals’.
For the classic pinup we looked Gil Elvgren, master of the pinup painting! You can see more of his work here and see some of the original photos the paintings were inspired by:
The painting we chose was the 1949 “I’ve been spotted”.
The Barbie Outfit
We were lucky to find just the right striped fabric for the dress! We decided to customise the dress with red detailing and straps, it gives it a nautical feel, which we thought was nice for spring.
We went for a fitting with Emma Lou at the studios of Miss Rain Photography and had some photos taken after the fitting.
The Classic Pinup Outfit
First up, we decided to change the colour of the outfit in the image to a super girly, baby pink/black. Then there was the challenge of making the top from the painting ‘come to life’, as the way it is in the painting is slightly unrealistic for a real garment.
We decided to try and recreate the pose in the painting in the studio!
On With The Show!
With a few last minute tweaks to the outfits completed we packed them off with Emma Lou along with 9 packs of hair flowers and lollipops and hair flowers for the 9 contestants in the show.
We didn’t get to go to the festival ourselves to see the show but here are some photos we’ve gathered from around the web!
Massive thanks to Emma Lou for representing us this year and to Di from Outer Limitz for putting on the show. Big congratulations to the 3 ladies who won prizes!
Until next year! 🙂
